There’s something magical about Europe at Christmastime!
I choose each European Christmas markets river cruise carefully, based on itinerary, timing, and overall experience. This 2027 sailing from Basel to Frankfurt offers the right mix of charming towns, iconic markets, and relaxed pacing that makes the trip feel truly worth it.
I also intentionally choose sailings that conflict the least with the holidays at home. This cruise departs just after Thanksgiving and early in the Christmas season, so you can experience Europe’s festive markets and still be home to celebrate with your family.
Early December typically offers a better chance at milder weather, smaller crowds, and that fresh “start of the season” feeling. And yes, it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up meaningful gifts you won’t find anywhere else. In fact, I have it on good authority that you might need to purchase a new suitcase on the way home!
This itinerary sails along the Rhine River, visiting some of Europe’s most beautiful towns and cities during the most festive season of the year. Each stop brings a different market, different traditions, and a new reason to fall in love with this part of the world.
Note: Solo travelers are always welcome on my trips. In fact, I usually travel solo myself, so please don’t hesitate to join even if you don’t know anyone. You’ll come home with a whole new group of friends.
Picture cobblestone town squares glowing with lights, wooden stalls filled with handmade ornaments, roasted nuts in the air, and historic cathedrals rising above it all. Each stop brings a different tradition, different flavors, and a different atmosphere, all without unpacking more than once. Itinerary below.

A Colmar-based extension during Alsace’s medieval Christmas market weekend.
Following the cruise, I plan to offer an optional 3-night land extension based in Colmar, perfectly timed for the opening of the smaller medieval Christmas markets in the surrounding Alsace villages.
Colmar makes an ideal home base, and over the weekend we’ll use the Christmas shuttle buses to visit nearby storybook towns, where half-timbered houses, festive lights, and traditional markets create some of the most iconic holiday scenes in Europe. These medieval markets are extremely popular and can be very busy, especially on weekends, but they offer incredible festive energy, atmosphere, and photo opportunities, and they are some of my personal favorites.
Pricing, once finalized, will include:
A private transfer from the ship to Colmar (approximately a 2.5-hour drive)
A well-located hotel within walking distance of several markets
My services as your personal guide throughout the land extension
Transportation to the Basel or Zurich airport at the end of the stay
Not included:
Local bus or shuttle tickets
Meals and personal expenses
This optional land extension will be limited to a maximum of 14 travelers. Pricing will be determined based on the final number of participants and will be shared once interest and group size are confirmed.

Deposit & Payment Plan
A $500 per person deposit secures your cabin. The deposit is non-refundable, however Avalon has historically allowed deposits to be transferred to a different sailing in many situations if plans shift.
After the deposit, the remaining balance is divided into four scheduled payments:
• July 1, 2026
• November 2, 2026
• April 1, 2027
• August 2, 2027 (final payment)
I’ll send reminders and handle the payment process so you don’t have to keep track of deadlines.
French balcony cabins feature floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open for fresh air and beautiful views, but do not include an outdoor sitting area. You still enjoy natural light, scenery, and fresh air without stepping outside.
What is the deposit and payment schedule?
A $500 non-refundable deposit per person is required to secure your cabin. After the deposit, the remaining balance is split into four equal payments, payable by credit card on July 1, 2026, November 2, 2026, April 1, 2027, and August 2, 2027. Final payment is due August 2, 2027.
What does non-refundable mean if I can’t go?
The deposit is non-refundable. Occasionally, the cruise line may allow a name change on a cabin, which could make it possible for someone else to travel in your place. This is not guaranteed and is always subject to cruise line approval. I will check options on your behalf if this situation arises.
What is included in the cruise fare?
The cruise fare includes Wi-Fi, gratuities, all standard guided shore excursions, drinks at lunch, dinner, and happy hour (mocktails, wine, beer, and soft drinks), and coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fruit-infused water, and snacks available 24/7.
Are excursions included?
Yes. Each day typically includes 1–2 guided excursions at no additional cost. Occasionally, optional excursions may be offered for an additional fee. These are clearly marked and completely optional.
What cabin options are available?
Cabins are single or double occupancy only. There are no triple or quad occupancy options on this ship. Lower Deck cabins have a fixed window positioned high on the wall. French Balcony cabins on the second and third decks feature full-height sliding windows that open for fresh air. Scroll down further to see more about Avalon Waterways.
What are the bed configurations?
Cabins are set up with one queen bed or two twin beds for friends traveling together. Please share your preference at booking.
What is dining like on a river cruise?
River cruise dining follows European standards and is different from ocean cruising. There is one main restaurant with meals served at set times. Breakfast is a buffet with a few set menu items. Lunch is served as a buffet or plated meal, and on some days a lighter buffet may be available in the lounge. Dinner is a five-course, sit-down meal each evening.
What is the dress code onboard?
The dress code is smart casual. Jeans, sweaters, and comfortable shoes are perfectly acceptable. There is no formal night.
Is airfare included?
No. Airfare is not included in the cruise price.
Can you help with flights?
Yes. Flight research and booking assistance is available for a $50 per person fee. Flight changes after booking are subject to a $50 change fee, plus any airline-imposed fees or fare differences.
I’m traveling solo. What are my options?
Solo travelers are welcome. If desired, you may choose to be paired with another traveler in a shared cabin. Single-occupancy cabins are also available in very limited numbers. Single pricing is typically close to double the per-person rate, minus some taxes and fees. Please contact me directly to discuss current solo availability and pricing.
When should I book?
Group pricing is locked in, and deposits are now being accepted. Lower-priced cabins are limited and will sell out, so booking sooner gives you the best chance of securing your preferred cabin category.
